 We
only work half a day on Saturdays though it used to be all day.
It's good to get home and get my dirty work clothes off. We get
quite a few days off now, at Christmas, Easter, Whitsun and the
end of August. We don't get paid but we can usually work a bit of
extra time to make up the money. There's often some sports organised
at the Athletic field on holidays, races and the like.
 Saturday
afternoon is a chance to spend some time with the family. I don't
really see much of them in the week, especially Edwin who usually
goes to bed soon after supper.
If it's fine I might do some work in the garden or clean out the
chickens. The vegetables and eggs do come in handy.
 Sometimes
I go fishing with Frank or take him to see the Rugby football. There's
a Heathcoat team. Sometimes we go visiting. If Elizabeth goes to
her mother's I might go down to the Racehorse and have a chin wag
with the lads or I might just stay home and enjoy having the house
to myself.

 Elizabeth
Up and off to work for John, Eliza and Ellen as usual, but no school
for Frank and Alice is home. We go to the market in the morning
and buy what we need, some sugar, butter and tea, a mutton joint
for Sunday, a bit of bacon and maybe some sausages.
The factory only works half a day on Saturday so after they've
come home and eaten, cleaned up and changed, we might go and visit
relatives. John's brother Edwin just lives round the corner. We
might go for a walk up Loughborough Fields if it's fine. Sometimes
John takes Frank fishing if he's not too tired.There's always something
in the house for me and the girls to do.
 I
try to see my mum near Silverton as often as I can afford, once
a month if I can . We get the train to Tiverton Junction and change
there for Silverton. The train journey takes about 3/4 of an hour
and then we have to walk the rest of the way. Alice, Frank and Edwin
like going to the country to see their Gran. We go third class and
try to be home before dark. |
