Many think that The Royal Albert Bridge, Saltash is Brunel's masterpiece. This railway bridge is 100ft above the River Tamar, and 2200ft long and all trains in and out of Cornwall still cross it today!

The Royal Albert Bridge combined all Brunel's skills and expertise, in the use of riveted wrought iron, ship building, 'tubular' construction and the principlesof the suspension bridge. It was opened on 2nd May 1859 by Prince Albert, just a few months before Brunel's death.

The original paint specified by Brunel for the Royal Albert Bridge contained an additive mined at Kelly Mine near Lustleigh which gave the paint a surface like fish scales and protected against rust.
