Sampler and a Photo of a Sofa Cushion
This sampler was embroidered by a girl called Mary Bartley in 1862, aged 12. Girls would work on samplers like this when they were as young as 8 years old. They needed to have good needlework skills to make good wives.

The prayer reads:

Lord Jesus teach a child to pray
Who humbly kneels to thee
And every night and every day
My Friend and Saviour be.

While here I live give me thy grace
And when I'm called to die
O' take my soul to see thy face
And sing thy praise on high.
