Open Hearth Cooking: Until the first kitchen range was designed by Thomas Robinson in 1780, cooking was done over an open wood fire. Food could be boiled in a cauldron hung over the fire, or spit roasted. Smaller cooking pots could be stood on trivets. Food was still cooked in this way in many country cottages until the beginning of the 20th century (1900s). | Roll over this photo to switch between the cooking pot in the museum's collection and a photo of a cooking pot used over an open fire at a farmhouse in Bow, Devon about 100 years ago. | ||||
