This carpet beater has a varnished wooden handle and wire beater. Before the invention of the vacuum cleaner rugs were taken outside and beaten to remove the dust and dirt. Larger carpets were scattered with damp tea leaves and swept with a broom. Occasionally they would be treated to get rid of bugs. |
Roll over this photo to switch between the carpet beater in the museum's collection and an advertisement for bug powder. | ||||
