Phonograph and advert

This phonograph was made in 1895 by the Edison Bell Consolidated Phonograph Company Ltd.

Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877. The handle winds up a clockwork motor, which turns the wax cylinder round and round. The moveable metal trumpet acts as a loudspeaker. It was originally invented as a dictation machine, but soon inspired the invention of the gramophone in 1887 by Emile Berliner which played flat discs or records. This marked the start of the mass music industry (in 1907 records of the singer Enrico Caruso made $2million!)
