Single Line Staff

The single line staff was used on the railways. A signalmen 'locked' a single line to stop more than one train using it at a time. The staff was carried by the train driver and dropped off at the end of the single line, allowing the line to be used by another train.

See a video clip, made in the 1960s, showing how a single line key was used on the Tiverton Branch Line until 1963.

This 2.4MB video clip requires a broadband connection and the free realplayer software.
